Nun's Island
Although an integral part of the borough of Verdun, Île des Sœurs is distinguished by its geographical location. It's a large island in the St. Lawrence River south of the island of Montreal, named after the community of teaching nuns of the Notre-Dame de Montréal congregation, who owned it from the 18th century onwards.
This predominantly high-density residential island, due to its proximity to downtown Montreal, also includes an office sector, including Bell's Quebec headquarters, and businesses located close to road access. The island is also the site of the foot of the brand-new Samuel-de Champlain Bridge, linking Montreal to the south shore of the river.
The Domaine Saint-Paul, close to Lac des Battures, is a wetland that is home to migratory birds and an undeniable part of the island's natural heritage.
As a testament to the island's architectural heritage, the internationally renowned architect Mies van der Rohe designed a modern-style gas station in the 1960s, as well as the three Hi-Rise towers.
The island's residential market is considered medium to luxury. It features a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and, above all, multiple condo towers that compete with each other for exclusive views of downtown. This diversity is the pride of an ever-growing active population.
Among the island's prestigious activities are the Golf Exécutif de Montréal, with its virtual simulators and Trackman technology, considered by architectural design magazine Dezeen to be one of the world's top 10 sports centers, with its chalet and eco-friendly 9-hole course. The year-round Tennis Club, meanwhile, is considered the largest indoor tennis club in North America. Finally, for walking enthusiasts, there are dozens of kilometers of hiking trails along the banks of the river.
More recently, the REM (Réseau express métropolitain) has made it possible to reach downtown in just six minutes. This rare ease of access has not gone unappreciated by residents, who can now better combine urban and residential life. In just a few minutes, they can go from the pleasures of the family pool to the hectic nightlife of downtown.
